Herdwick Sheep at Pry House Farm

Heidi and Hetty, two new arrrivals at Pry House Farm

An unusual Christmas present for some but I was thrilled when my husband surprised me with two beautiful Herdwick ewes.  And in-lamb too!

I have always been fascinated by herdwick sheep, native to the high fells and mountains of the Lake District.  A hill breed but so very different to our Swaledale sheep.  They are bigger and stronger.  Their fleece is deep and dense and their heavily boned legs are covered with thick hair all the way to their shiny hooves making it look like they are wearing flared trousers!

So what to call them?  Family and friends came up with lots of suggestions but finally I decided on Heidi and Hetty.

Such excitement!  They have both been scanned and Hetty is carrying twins and Heidi is having a single.  Lambing time is a special time in the farming calendar but this year it will be very special indeed.
